How to make it pretty?

Now that I have a snazzy paid account courtesy of romanyg, I feel like I should actually make my journal pretty. Problem: I have no idea how! I have a feeling it's something to do with these mysterious "styles," but no idea where to start.

Also, no graphics software. No way to make pretty banners. Um, anyone?

See, someone does one nice thing for me and all of a sudden I'm asking for a dozen more favours!

On an unrelated note: when I was buying milk at the Couche Tard earlier, a Spike lookalike walked in. He had the coat, the boots, the hair! His face didn't really look like JM's, but in terms of outfit, dude was Spike. Fun. I tried very hard not to stare.

Okay.

I'm not sure how much detail you need, but here goes nothing. You can customize your LJ without doing the huge starting-from-scratch scary thing.

1. On your info page tool bar, click on MANAGE, CUSTOMIZE.
2. Go with the new system, because I don't know the old one. :0)
3. Mess around with your LAYOUT and THEME options until you are satisfied. Mmm...satisfied.
4. Click on EDIT CUSTOMIZATIONS there at the bottom.
5. Fool around with the colours if you so choose, but then click on TEXT up there at the top right of the box.
6. Change your default comment thingy to something clever and/or fun. The first is what it says before anyone comments, the second is what it says after someone comments.

Sorry, I know nothing about banners and stuff - but this should get you started!

Um, I think I'm already on the old one (S1)? And I have no idea how to switch. All the options I've got under "manage" are S1 options.

Does it not give you the option to switch from S1 to S2 (and back again) at the very top of the page, first thing, under CHOOSE STYLE SYSTEM?

If it doesn't, I'm already out of ideas. :0)
