Happy New Year, and Doctor Who?

Hey, happy New Year everybody!

Since this is my first post in a while, I'll mention that I'm writing; I'm working on "That Good Night," though it's currently going slow like molasses.

But in other news, I just watched the entire first season of the new Doctor Who. A few spoilery impressions behind the cut, and also some questions for those of you who know more than I do!

Oh my god, Captain Jack. I mean, I love the Doctor and Rose, but from a slash perspective, Captain Jack is pretty damn exciting. An explicitly bisexual recurring character, oh my! He kissed Rose and he kissed the Doctor, and he went off to die, and I was sad. And then he lived again, but missed his ride. Oops!

So, here's my question. I've managed to get myself spoiled to the point of knowing that Captain Jack, rather than returning to the Tardis, somehow ends up in the spinoff series Torchwood (somewhere in 21st century Wales). But I think that only runs for a year? And meanwhile there's two seasons with Doctor Ten, who starts out with Rose but gets a new companion somewhere along the way, though I'm not sure if Rose disappears at that point or not. I'm not clear on whether Captain Jack returns to Doctor Who eventually. This, I would like to know.

Also, how's Torchwood? And is it available on DVD? In Canada?

Torchwood will now get a second season and in the meantime Jack will appear in a few episodes of the later part of season 3 of Who.

Hee! I'm doing it backwards; I managed to acquire the first ep of Torchwood and was intrigued enough to research the new seasons of Dr. Who... and just put them on the top of my Netflix queue! :)

Alas, Torchwood is not yet available on DVD.

Yay! Another Doctor Who fan! I just discovered the new series recently, too (haven't watched much of the old one, though).

Just to let you know, I've found a number of the season two episodes on youtube.com, if you don't mind watching them all pixelated. Sadly, no Torchwood, though. Also, I think the second season is coming out on DVD fairly soon?

Hm, I think I'll hold out for not-so-pilexlated versions; I have already resorted to reading the Christmas Invasion recap at TelevisionWithoutPity, so at least I've slaked my desperate need to know What Happens Next.

(I haven't seen any of the old Doctor Who at all. I understand that there's a lot of it, though!)

Be warned - I found Torchwood disappointing.
Not lacking in slash by any means, but the team are not the least bit believeable as a crack unit that operates above the police and the armed forces.

Hm. Well, I'm still willing to give it a shot -- perhaps with lowered expectations I'll enjoy it more!

Yes, I definitely expected too much, especially after Dr Who was so good.
But with Dr Who, who is pretty much a free agent, you expect him to behave irresponsibly sometimes.
A crack pseudo-government agency - not so much.

I'm with Trepkos. I found Torchwood very disappointing, despite the slashy content. I thought Captain Jack's early promise in season 1 of Doctor Who was largely squandered and that the character worked a lot better as a sidekick of the Doctor.

As for Doctor Who itself, unfortunately for me, I'm one of the very few people who can't stand the 10th Doctor (played by David Tennant) and therefore I didn't enjoy the 2nd series all that much.

So far all I've seen of Doctor Ten is the little bit at the end of S1, so I have yet to make any judgements. I did like Nine quite a lot, though.

Me too! While CE was the Doctor, the show was appointment TV for me. Now, not so much.

Happy New Year to you too Shadowcast. I love Dr Who and I'm old enough to remember the very first episode andI hid behind the sofa when the Daleks came on. I love David Tennant as Dr Who but I'm in the minority when I say I didn't like the character of Rose, although I loved Micky and Rose's mum Jackie.

As for Torchwood, I was disappointed in it, did they have to make the characters either nasty or irritating. Gwen especially (the irritating part. Captain Jack was not half as good in this as in Dr Who. I felt some of the stories had a very slim connection to aliens.

I saw just one part of one episode of the older Doctor Who. I don't know which doctor it was. It was when I was maybe eight or so. (So, about 1985? Could've been a rerun, though.) All I remember is that there was a checkerboard floor, black and white tiles, and some of them were trapped, and the Doctor had to jump across in just the right way, and his Companion had to follow him. And I remember being scared by it!

I *LOVE* Torchwood. The last 2 episodes have that same movie-like quality to them as "Parting of the Ways".

As for Season Two of Doctor Who, wouldn't it be great if you had a friend with the whole season (starting with The Christmas Invasion) in good res burnt on DVD? Oh, wait.... I do. *g*
