I had a lovely social weekend, but I didn't get much writing done. The next chapter of "How the Light Gets In" is standing at about 750 words, and I usually aim for between 1500 and 2500 per chapter. Well, maybe next weekend!

Meanwhile, I did have a nice S2 marathon with a friend of mine. So I have a few words to say about "Ted."

This was the first time I'd re-watched early S2 since having watched the rest of the series, so I noticed something new: Ted's characterization is such a foreshadowing of the Mayor's! He has the same kind of creepy-nice speech patterns, the same "gosh, young lady" vocabulary and the same fixation with miniature golf!

The friend I was watching with hadn't seen this ep before, but had seen much of S3, and as soon as Ted mentioned miniature golf my friend cried out "He's evil!"

And on a perhaps more interesting note: this was the first time Buffy deals with the (supposed) killing of a human. I noticed that her reaction was very consistent with her later reaction to Faith accidentally killing the Mayor's aide, and to thinking that she killed Katrina. When the police came to get Ted's body, Joyce actually started to cover up for Buffy, telling the police "He fell," but Buffy spoke up immediately: "I pushed him." She was obviously completely wrecked by thinking she'd killed a person, but at no point did she try to cover it up or hide from the consequences.

I had a funny thought when watching this: what if Warren found Ted's remains, and that's how he got into the robot biz? Heh, that would probably make a fun drabble. Um, if I hadn't just spoiled it.

You could still write it.

Why not?

I suspect that the miniature golf thing came up so much because Joss and the writers found it a particularly stupid activity.

I think the thing that they're attacking with that behavior pattern is the whole 1950's "golden era" mentality, which also comes up pretty clearly on Angel. It ties in well with the established trope of literal hell- under- suburbia.

I'm not sure I said that right.

No, I think what you said makes perfect sense.
