Too many sad anniversaries

Listening to the radio while working late tonight, I learned that this is the anniversary of John Lennon being shot (December 8, 1980).

Yesterday was the anniversary of Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941).

Probably fewer of you know that the day before, December 6, was also the anniversary of two tragedies:

December 6, 1917: the Halifax Explosion. amerella will know about this one; dunno if anyone else out there will, as even a lot of Canadians I've met don't know about it, but I grew up going to memorial ceremonies every December 6th. I heard the memorial bells ring every day at noon through most of my childhood. I cried at the exhibit at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

December 6, 1989: the Montreal Massacre. I cried again tonight when I read the poem ponycow posted: 14, As More Than Just a Number, by Anna Humphrey

This is true, and appalling. I tend to think Canadians are fairly good at knowing their history as opposed to certain other leading nations, but it's not always true, sadly. ;(

I can't be too irate about it, since I'm honestly awful with history myself—I remember general senses of things, but dates and details slip right away. So, hey, the things I do remember I share, and hope others will tell me the parts of history they remember.
