Reading my own stuff

I have a slightly sheepish confession: lately, for comfort reading, I've been re-reading my own fanfic. That I wrote.

But I mean, why not? I wrote exactly the stories that I wanted to read, after all. And when the world is feeling rather scary and out of my control, it's soothing to retreat into a world where I am God, and everything happens because I will it.

Plus, I write a lot of hurt-comfort. Bad things happen, but then there are hugs. And that's what I want right now—the certainty of hugs at the end.

You're quite right about fanfic. I started writing mine because no one was writing exactly what I wanted to read, so I thought I might as well write it myself.

However, I've turned to Terry Pratchett to get through this.

I suspect that this is the motivation behind a great deal of fanfiction! (Probably pro fic too, and even non-fiction, when I stop and think about it...)

Oh yes, it certainly would be!

I finished my last big work just before things got serious locally (really just before; I finished March 6th, and my school shut down on March 14th). I'm glad I did, because transitioning to online teaching has taken all of my creative energy—the story definitely would have stalled, if it had still been a WIP.

Makes perfect sense to me. I mean, most fanfic authors are going to write what they most want to read, the odd gift or exchange work aside. Even though I can't say I do it for comfort reasons, I find I re-read my own meta work regularly. I mean, I don't seek it out, but when someone leaves a kudos on a work I haven't read in a few years I'll often end up re-reading it too. Unsurprisingly, I find I really agree with the points in it :D

Go for it - I'd re-read mine more often, but when I do, I always spot something I want to fix. There will be hugs.

LOL, that happens to me too! It's amazing how new typos that definitely weren't there before somehow creep in every time I re-read a work! (Must be gremlins.)
