Thank you so much for the feedback! I'm not sure if you'll get this reply, since it's been a while since you posted, but I'll respond to a couple of things anyway:

The drugs thing, yeah. Spike is not in a good place at all in this story, and canonically he does tend to seek chemical oblivion when things get rough. Xander's guess that he was self-medicating was pretty spot on.
So finally Spike was allowed true oblivion, and he saved the world. I think it's the best ending I could have given him, though I know it was sad, too.
