Okay, I've now backed up my journals with LJ-Archive. It was pleasingly quick and easy! And I was delighted to see that one can also use it to back up communities; the only snag is that if one isn't a moderator, then it doesn't seem to copy comments from communities.
Honestly, the comments-in-communities thing is only an issue because there are a couple of fic posts I've made to communities, and I'd very much like to be able to save a copy of my feedback—because it keeps me warm at night! Since we're talking a relatively small number of posts, I guess I'll just use my browser to save the pages themselves. There's probably a more technically brilliant way to do it, but this'll do for me.
Tonight I'm working on configuring my InsaneJournal account. I need to put together some userinfo, upload some icons ... and, of course, build a friends list. Funny thing is, I think I'm even friending some people there who I didn't have friended at LiveJournal. This is partly because I'd been neglecting housekeeping of my LJ flist for a very long time, and partly because, of course, the pool of people I recognise at all at InsaneJournal is currently a little on the small side.
I'm also pondering a new etiquette question. Since we're all learning how to post to more than one journal at the same time, and so many people are now managing multiple mostly-redundant flists, I'm wondering whether I should change my LJ-cutting habits. Traditionally, when posting a shortish (like, under 400 words or so?) entry that's mostly text, or text with one or two small graphics, I wouldn't cut. It takes less time to skim past a short entry than to click on an LJ-cut. But now, if people are potentially going to be seeing identical copies of my entry on two or three flists, maybe I should cut sooner? Like, should I have cut this entry after the first paragraph?
What do you think?
*sigh* One of these days, I'll actually get back to writing fic!
