The Spike and Angel thing again.
Nov. 4th, 2005 02:15 amToday I had the chance to watch Buffy and Angel episodes with two different friends: one who's watching Buffy S4 and Angel S1, and the other who's watching Angel S5. So in the afternoon I watched "The Harsh Light of Day" and "In the Dark," and in the evening I watched "Lineage" and "Destiny."
Interesting juxtoposition. For one thing, I got to watch Spike beat up Angel twice in one day. ::pauses for moment of evil glee:: Well, okay, the first time was just by proxy ... know what's weird? I'd totally remembered the torture-vamp from "In the Dark" as having a German accent, but he doesn't at all, he's got a nondescript American (or possibly Canadian) accent. Wonder what that says about me.
It also occurs to me that, stop me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't "In the Dark" have been the last time Angel saw Spike before he popped out of the amulet? Which, now that I think about it, makes me somewhat more sympathetic about Angel being an asshole to Spike throughout early S5. I mean, Spike had been through a lot since then, but Angel wasn't there for any of it; in Angel's mind there was the 20-ish years of carnage, the submarine, the brief Angelus period in Sunnydale, the torture in the warehouse in "In the Dark"—and that was all he really knew of Spike. Sure, he'd heard strange stories from Sunnydale about Spike helping the Scoobies, disturbing stories about Spike having sex with Buffy, troubling-in-ways-he's-not-ready-to-admit-to-himself stories about Spike going out and winning a soul—but he wasn't there for any of that, so it wouldn't have been real to him in the way that the rest of it was.
Hmm.
Meanwhile, watching "Destiny" in particular is always a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. Leaves me wanting to soothe myself by writing more Fragments-verse.
