I don't normally think of s!3 Giles as mistrusting, even though he was.

My feeling about Giles is that he himself didn't change all that much over the course of the series, but the way everyone else saw him did. Since we're seeing this Giles from Xander's older-and-wiser POV, he's not that different from Giles of the later years.

Poor Xander and Spike, now stuck with a very bad problem.
